They generally stand 12-16 inches at the shoulders and weigh from 53 to 55 lbs. The breed has wide shoulders and chest and a distinctive, rolling, and shuffling gait. The body of the dog is compact and muscular; the legs are short; and the muzzle is massive, with a laid back nose and dense folds of skin. An average life span for the breed is 8-12 years. An average number of puppies in the litter ranges from 4 to 5 animals. It is not recommended to buy a puppy of this breed from a pet store, as pet stores often cannot supply the puppies with proper care. Buy a dog directly from a reputable breeder. Originating in England, this breed descended from the Mastiff breeds selectively bred to overcome a bull or hold its own in the pit. When bull baiting was prohibited by the law, breed fanciers started to preserve, promote and protect the breed as a valued family pet. It was one of the first breeds to be granted official recognition when The English Kennel Club was organized in 1873. This breed is a symbol of tenacity and has become a popular mascot demonstrating the toughness of the team. Its initial purpose was bull baiting and fighting bears, monkeys, and badgers. The peculiar features of the breed are: high pain threshold, powerful jaws, and low gravity center. British bulldog puppies are very popular and can be viewed in a photo.
