English Bulldogs are completely different in their character from what their appearance may inspire. Viciousness and ferocity has been completely bred out of them, and over the past century, they have been made into wonderful home pets. They are very good with children, and it is very common for an English bulldog to lie calmly in their place and contentedly contemplate their owners. From their old predecessors, English Bulldogs have inherited fascinating integrity and courage, which is observable when it comes to protecting their homes and families against unwanted guests.
English Bulldogs - Puppy - Breeding Methods
There are four basic types of breeding procedures, and these are in-breeding, line-breeding, out-crossing and out-breeding. Each of these methods has its own pluses ad minuses, and each can be applied in different circumstances.
In-breeding consists in mating close relatives. This is done in order to intensify some desirable traits. However, this method is in no way effective, because faulty features also receive a considerable boost, and there is rather little chance that a large amount of healthy species will occur in a litter. This method is used as the last resort, when the existence of a whole breed is in question.
Line-breeding is mating between comparatively distant relatives, but within known range of the pedigree line. This method requires thorough knowledge of all species within the breeding range, their special features or hereditary deviations. This allows breeders to conduct selective breeding and develop uniform qualities in litters with more efficiency than in-breeding can guarantee.
Out-crossing is mating species of two separate pedigree lines. The species must be products of line-breeding. This method is widely used in long-term breeding programs, because parental traits may not appear in descendants. Sometimes it takes several generations for the desired qualities to surface. Therefore, this method works better in combination with in-breeding and line-breeding.
Out-breeding is mating two species, which do not belong to the same line and which are not the products of line-breeding. This method exists only in theory and is not a practice, because there are no English Bulldogs of out-breeding quality.
