English Bulldogs - Puppy - Breed Description
Modern English Bulldogs are smaller than their feral ancestors were. They have lost their viciousness over the years of breeding because breeders have worked all these years to eradicate their appalling old features. Nowadays, English Bulldogs are amusingly funny, amazingly courageous and amorously loving family companions. They are excellent with children and elderly people.
There is but one feature that is still reminiscent of their early designation, and that is their somewhat threatening appearance. Their jaws close in a firm 'reversed scissors bite' and the lower mandible is slightly prognathous. This bite was their deadly weapon on bull-baiting arenas of the old times. They feature brawny bodies and distinctively tough front paws set widely apart. A big and broad head seems to be preponderant to the rest of the body, which adds a great deal to the general sturdiness of the dog.

English Bulldogs - Puppy - Head
English bulldogs have round eyes, which are set widely apart, and small folded ears, which should be set as far away from each other as possible. The eyes are neither sunken nor bulging. The ears are small rose-shaped and turned forward. The muzzle and neck are wrinkled. The profile view reveals a distinctive turn-up of the muzzle. The nose is wide and black. English Bulldogs are short-coated, and they occur in a variety of colors, including white, tan, beige, red, brown and so forth.
English Bulldogs - Puppy - Neck and Forequarters
Neck is not very long, but thick and muscled. It also features thick and folded skin near the throat. Profile view of an English Bulldog presents a distinct curvature of the backside of the neck. The shoulders are broad, sloping and brawny, clinging firmly to the body. The chest is deep and roomy, its width making the front legs appear short in relation to the entire body.
English Bulldogs - Puppy - Back and Hindquarters
The back is short and powerful, wide at the shoulders and comparatively narrow at the loins. Viewed from above, the body resembles a characteristic wedge-shaped figure. An English Bulldog viewed from the side, the back curves in such a way as to be relatively low and, close behind the shoulders and rising moderately toward the loins. The hind legs are longer than the front legs, and are set closer to each other. The tail is short and round, hanging straight down.
English Bulldogs - Puppy - Gait
Due to heavy muscle and robust body build, the gait appears rather labored and constrained. Hind feet seem to drag over the ground, and front feet move in short steps. When running, the right shoulder appears to slightly advance forward. English Bulldogs are not good in long distance running and they grow weary rather fast.
